Healthy diet

Damage to the intestinal epithelial cells during chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy can lead to diarrhoea, i.e. defecation more than three times a day. We can alleviate this condition by following nutritional recommendations.

When diarrhoea occurs, dietary recommendations are as follows:

  • drink- 2.5-3 litres per day to compensate for water loss. Drinks at room temperature are preferable: pureed vegetable and fruit juices (e.g. tomatoes), diluted broths, still mineral water, water with a small amount of salt and sugar. An infusion of dried blueberries can also be helpful. Carbonated drinks are contraindicated,

  • avoid foods that stimulate intestinal spasms, e.g. wholemeal bread, cereal products, raw fruit and vegetables, pulses, nuts, coffee and strong tea as well as fatty, fried and grilled foods,

  • for about 1-2 days of diarrhoea, only liquids and gruel should be consumed. When improvement is achieved, gradually include small amounts of solid food, e.g. cooked carrots with potatoes, banana mousse, baked apple every 2-3 hours, at least 5 meals a day,

  • exclude the consumption of foods that contain substances with a laxative effect, e.g. sorbitol, which can be found in chewing gum, sweets, jams and jellies,

  • increase the intake of foods rich in potassium and sodium, as these are lost during diarrhoea; the following are recommended: tomatoes, bananas, pureed juices of peaches or apricots, potatoes.

Chronic diarrhoea, which is a side effect of aggressive oncological treatment, is one of the most serious side effects. It causes great discomfort and further weakens the body exhausted by the disease.

Remember to inform your doctor directly about any disturbing symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract, and to modify your diet programme with the help of a dietician.
