Scooters litter the pavements!

Let's start with what the main disadvantages of e-scooters are, as unfortunately there are more disadvantages than advantages. The main disadvantage of these vehicles is that there are no designated return points for 'urban scooters' like there are for city bikes. Many people see this as an advantage, but unfortunately it is a disadvantage, as some people do not pay attention to where they leave their scooter and they are often blocked in the middle of the pavement making it difficult for pedestrians to pass.

No regulations governing scooters!

Another disadvantage of scooters is that there are currently no regulations governing the riding of these devices. In our country, they are only due to come into force in the spring. In France, on the other hand, such regulations are already in place. The inclusion of e-scooters in the highway code makes them legally recognised as a 'means of locomotion'. Until now, people riding an electric scooter were considered pedestrians. However, they will now have to comply with additional regulations. Among other things, the use of a mobile phone or headphones while riding will be prohibited. The scooter will also have to have working brakes, an audible signal and front and rear position lights. In addition, a number of other regulations have been introduced, such as the obligation to ride on cycle paths or speed limits. Non-compliance is punishable by hefty fines of up to EUR 3 000. Will similar rules also apply in Poland? We do not know yet, but it is certain that the new means of transport requires legal regulation.

Electric scooters dangerous from a medical point of view?

Electric scooters are a means of transport for getting from A to B quickly, which is why they have become popular with corporate employees. Unfortunately, scooter riders often do not do any sport, spending their days in front of computers, so their reaction time may be delayed. Every day, many Polish hospitals receive people with injuries after a scooter accident. Doctors point out that half of the patients are not users at all, but hit pedestrians. There are also many cases of people who get on their scooters after drinking alcohol - by age they are most often "40 plus". Helmets, knee pads or armrests can protect against many injuries. Remember to wear them, especially with a properly protected head, as unfortunately there are fatalities among e-scooter users.

Do electric scooters have any advantages then?

Using e-scooters for short distances has many advantages. We reduce pollution, which is greatest in the first phase of driving a car, we save time and we reduce costs. However, this is not quite the case. What about the operation of these devices, for example? Electric scooters unfortunately also have a negative impact on the environment because, like any electronic device, they will not last forever and will have to be replaced at some point.

The advantages of e-scooters, however, could be that:

They are a light, comfortable means of transport, so they are excellent for covering smaller and medium distances. They can be used, for example, to commute to work or university without standing in traffic jams.
They are manoeuvrable and small, making it easier to negotiate obstacles and ride freely around town.
They require leg work, which strengthens the muscles of the lower body and does not strain the joints.
They also strengthen the trunk and abdominal muscles due to the need to maintain balance.
They improve fitness and improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
Weight loss - an hour's ride burns between 400 and 500 kcal (depending on the intensity of the effort).
Riding a scooter consumes 30% more energy than riding a bike.
They allow to cover a given distance 3 times faster than on foot.

As we can see from the above examples, the disadvantages of e-scooters somewhat cover up their advantages. Whether you choose an electric scooter over other means of transport is up to you. However, keep in mind the safety not only of yourself, but also of other road users.
