Parents with mental health problems may often wonder whether their children will also develop similar problems. On the basis of currently available research, it can be concluded that indeed - descendants of patients with mental disorders are themselves at increased risk of developing them. Not for every psychiatric condition is this risk the same - so when is there the greatest risk that a parent will 'pass on' a mental illness to their child?
