Being a parent means deciding to step into the role of mum and dad. Parents adopt certain attitudes towards their child, not always the correct ones. Inappropriate parental attitudes focus on several dimensions.

Ad:

The second dimension focuses on the continuum of dominance - excessive submissiveness. Dominance is an imposing behaviour, i.e. an unchanging parental behaviour characterised by strictness and rigour. In the case of submissiveness, parents subordinate their needs to those of the child, making their lives dependent on the child's life and meeting the child's needs as the parents perceive them.[3]

So what are inappropriate parenting attitudes?

  • repulsive attitude: with excessive distance and dominance,
  • an avoidant attitude: with excessive distance and submissiveness,
  • overprotective attitude: with excessive concentration and submission
  • overly demanding attitude: when overly focused and dominant[4]

How do we communicate with our child? What attitude do we represent? Children are keen observers, so a parent should be aware of his or her behaviour towards the child and make every effort to pass on values and social norms. To have a happy and joyful childhood.
