The best way to prevent diabetic neuropathy in advance of the diagnosis of diabetes itself, let alone just afterwards, is a regime of maintaining glycaemia at moderate levels and regular blood glucose testing.

Ad:

It requires not only a change in lifestyle and diet, but also appropriate diagnostic and pharmacological management by the diabetologist, with particular attention to the first neuropathic changes. In the case of already diagnosed diabetes mellitus, fasting, adiposity and post-glucose load blood glucose tests should be performed on a venous plasma sample.

Other preventive measures in diabetic neuropathy include:

  • maintenance of normal lipid concentrations (HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides) - regular examinations
  • cessation of alcohol consumption
  • stopping smoking
  • taking moderate, regular exercise,
  • gentle and gradual reduction of body weight,
  • implementation of an appropriate diabetic diet,
  • taking B vitamins (especially B1, B6 and B12),
  • taking mineral preparations containing chromium,
  • taking of glycaemic normalizing herbal preparations (white mulberry, ginger, cinnamon),
  • taking preparations of alpha-lipoic acid.
