Visiting the dentist

Prosthetic stomatopathies are all lesions on the mucosal surface caused by the use of removable complete as well as partial dentures.

Ad:

Dentureplaque is an accumulation of plaque on dentures caused by inadequate oral hygiene. The upper denture plate covers a significant surface area of the mucosa, humidity and elevated temperatures facilitate plaque accumulation.

Symptoms

The main clinical symptoms of stomatopathy are redness and swelling on the mucosa under the denture. The staining may be light or dark red and restricted from the adjacent tissues. In Newton's classification, the clinical picture is divided into three categories:

  • Stage I- pink points of congestion are present
  • Stage II- diffuse congestion on the mucosa under the prosthesis is present
  • Stage III- hypertrophic changes are present, usually on the palate

Accompanying subjective symptoms may be soreness, burning, dry mouth, disturbance of taste sensations.

Treatment and prevention

Treatment of dentures consists of fitting the denture plate to the base and, if necessary, surgical treatment - mainly of hypertrophic lesions, and pharmacological treatment.

Prevention is very important. It consists mainly of maintaining good oral and prosthetic hygiene and more frequent check-ups with the dentist.
