Sore throat

One of the causes of infection can sometimes be a poor diet, with a preference for highly refined foods, such as pastries, and sugar, at the expense of foods containing the vitamins and minerals necessary to mobilise the body's natural defences.

In addition to vitamin C, they contain beta-carotene, which is converted in the body into vitamin A, which plays an important role in maintaining the normal condition of the mucous membranes, including the throat mucosa.

Other sources of vitamin A are:

  • liver,
  • margarines and low-fat bread spreads enriched with this vitamin.

People taking antibiotics should - at least once after the end of their treatment - drink yoghurt with live bacteria cultures in order to renew the intestinal bacterial environment destroyed during treatment.

To relieve a sore throat, proponents of natural nutrition recommend drinking a drink made from the juice of half a lemon and a teaspoon of honey in a glass of hot water.

Lemon juice contains vitamin C, which stimulates the production of saliva and soothes irritated throat mucosa, while honey is recommended in folk medicine to relieve a sore throat.

The throat can also be gargled with sage infusion.
This is prepared by pouring a teaspoon of dried herbs or a tablespoon of fresh, chopped sage (red is better than garden sage) into hot water.

The sore throat usually lasts 3-4 days, if the symptoms persist longer, you need to seek medical advice as it could be the beginnings of an illness, such as infectious mononucleosis or mumps.

A traditional sore throat remedy still used today is a glass of hot milk mixed with a teaspoon of honey.
