Spinal muscular atrophy (SA) is a genetically determined disease that occurs very rarely. It occurs due to the destruction of the anterior nuclei of the spinal cord and the nucleus accumbens. The loss of nerve cells (neurons) leads to muscle weakness and even atrophy. The consequence is that the affected person has difficulty in functioning.
