- Can watching comedy have a positive effect on your mood?

Of course. Watching films evokes certain emotions and engages our senses. The rule of thumb is, if you're unwell, watch something cheerful. I think the main motivation (sometimes unconsciously) for anyone watching comedies is to improve their mood.

- How does laughter affect our health and wellbeing?

Laughter has a very positive effect on our body and mind, our psyche.
When we laugh our body is better oxygenated, accelerated breathing facilitates the removal of carbon dioxide from the body. Our heart beats faster, which significantly affects its work throughout the day. Accelerated heart rate has a positive effect on blood pressure. Laughter strengthens our immune system. Laughing engages the muscles of the face, abdomen and chest - great exercise for the body. Laughter speeds up digestion and stimulates the metabolism. In many psychological experiments, it has been proven that it is possible to fight lowered mood or even depression through laughter therapy. Concentration and memory also improve thanks to better brain function. In conclusion, laughter makes us more resilient, strengthens our immune system, reinforces our heart and vascular system, increases our lung capacity, stimulates our metabolism, firms up our skin, improves our muscles, increases our self-confidence and builds healthy relationships with other people.

Often while watching films we laugh, we cry, we experience problems together with the characters and we go through them together. Some people accuse film-makers of promoting inappropriate behaviour, praising violence, arousing aggression in young people towards their environment. However, the creators of the cinema-therapy trend assume that while film can have a bad effect, it can also have a healing effect and model the right behaviour in people as well. A film can help to understand the nature of the problem, show mechanisms and ways of dealing with it. It can give hope for a positive solution. It gives the opportunity to observe specific ways of coping and to choose the most appropriate one, without the risk of negative consequences. A film can make us stop and look at a particular aspect of our lives. Following this line of thought, it is not only comedies that can have a good effect on our wellbeing. Sometimes sad, psychological films that make us think more deeply are able to improve our mood by giving us an example of how to deal with the problems of everyday life, giving us concrete solutions and showing us that we are not the only ones struggling....
