Addiction psychotherapy uses the terms 'abstinence' and 'sobriety' in its nomenclature. These terms differ significantly and illustrate the functioning of the person with alcohol dependence. Some people in addiction therapy maintain abstinence, but not all of them "sober up", which in turn ends up in a return to drinking alcohol.
