Ulceration (Latin ulceratio) - a defect in the skin or mucous membrane that occurs following tissue breakdown and is caused by a chronic extrinsic or intrinsic stimulus.
The aetiology of ulcer formation in the oral cavity can be multiple. However, a healing wound should never be underestimated, as it may be the cause of a serious systemic disease or cancer. If this is the case, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible.
