Escherichia coli is a bacterium that leads to gastrointestinal and urinary tract disorders.

It is believed that 80%-90% of women with a normal anatomical structure of the genitourinary tract will experience an acute urinary tract infection at least once in their lifetime, while 1%-2% of women suffer from this condition once a month.

Factors that favour urinary tract infections in women in the 15-50 age group are:

  • sexual intercourse;
  • contraception;
  • spermicidal substances;
  • antimicrobial substances;
  • urinary tract infections;
  • history of urinary tract infections or during childhood;
  • lack of blood group antigens.

In women between 50 and 70 years, factors include:

  • lack of estragens; lack of
  • surgical treatment in the urinary tract;
  • urinary incontinence;
  • bladder hernia;
  • lack of blood group antigens;
  • urinary tract infections.

After the age of 70, the following are mentioned:

  • catheterisation;
  • urinary incontinence;
  • urinary tract surgical treatment.
