Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a unique time in a woman's life. Some viral infections can have serious consequences for the development of the foetus - e.g. rubella, chickenpox, HIV, hepatitis B, herpes(HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and parvovirus B19. Toxoplasma parasite infection is also dangerous.

A fairly common virus is the chickenpox virus. Infection can cause pneumonia - about 10% of cases - and even death in the elderly and pregnant women. Infection during the first trimester does not increase the risk of miscarriage.

When infection occurs later in pregnancy, it can cause congenital smallpox in the baby (manifested by low birth weight, scarring of the skin, neurological disorders, limb and eye defects, mental retardation, etc.).When infection occurs after 28 weeks of pregnancy, no congenital syndrome is found. Smallpox vaccine is available and recommended for women who have not had smallpox. You should be vaccinated at least one month before planning to become pregnant.

Toxoplasma is a parasite found in the faeces of infected cats, infected raw meat, especially pork. The disease usually has a mild course and most people do not even know they have passed it. However, it can be dangerous if the infection occurs during pregnancy. If infection of the foetus occurs in the early stages of pregnancy, it can result in miscarriage or birth defects. To avoid infection with toxoplasmosis, avoid eating raw meat, wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning the cat's litter tray.

Although some diseases are harmless to healthy people, they can be dangerous to pregnant women and the foetus. It is important to be aware of the risks and, if possible, take effective prophylaxis.
