When the air temperature drops to zero, the skin's defence mechanisms weaken, as the sebaceous glands work less well at low temperatures, the amount of ceramides and fatty acids decreases, and the amount and composition of lipids changes adversely. Moisture then quickly escapes from the epidermis. If we neglect skin care, we expose ourselves to long-term consequences. The skin becomes rough, inflexible and prone to irritation and sensitisation.
