The results of one recent study indicate a link between taking antipsychotic medication and the risk of death by choking. It is suspected that in people with schizophrenia, the increased risk of death by choking is due not only to an innate predisposition, but also to taking certain specific antipsychotic drugs.

In the study group, 70 cases of death by choking were detected over a period of seven years. In 25 cases, the individuals had previous contact with psychiatric institutions (it was found that 10 of them had schizophrenia, 8 suffered from organic disorders). On the basis of the examination of blood samples taken post mortem, it was determined whether the persons had taken antipsychotic drugs.
