Arterial embolism occurs as a result of partial or complete occlusion of the arterial lumen, either by an atherosclerotic plaque or a clot. The lumen of the artery becomes severely narrowed which can lead to problems with the movement of blood and nutrients (throughout the body).
Other causes of an embolism can also be tumour cell(s), a tiny bubble of gas or a clumped ball of fat. There are several types of blockages. If an embolism occurs in a cerebral artery, a cerebral infarction may occur, so this is a very dangerous situation that can threaten the health and life of the patient.
