A study conducted by Prof. Penny M. Kris-Etherton and colleagues at Pennsylvania State University showed that the consumption of one avocado per day reduces LDL bad cholesterol levels by 13.4 mg/dl. Forty-five overweight people took part in the research work. Participants were offered three different diets: medium fat, low fat and medium fat with one avocado daily. Each diet lowered the fraction of bad cholesterol, but the greatest decrease was observed in the medium-fat diet with avocado. In addition, the subjects consuming avocado showed the best improvement in total cholesterol and triglycerides compared to the two proposed diets.
