Research conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital indicates that there is a link between brain structure and the ability to cope with traumatic experiences and certain personality traits. A link has been shown to exist between extraversion and general brain activity, particularly in the ventral prefrontal cortex, which may have an inhibitory effect on the activity of the amygdala. Experimental studies have shown that people who experience less anxiety in response to stressful experiences have a thicker cortex in the middle prefrontal area.
