Nature has surprised us once again - research shows that the venom toxin produced by one wasp is able to help fight cancer cells!
Recent scientific research shows that a venom toxin produced by a Brazilian wasp (Polybia Paulista) called PM1, can selectively destroy cancer cells. Importantly, without damaging healthy cells in the body. Presumably, it interacts with the lipids on the surface of the cancer cell (which are distributed differently to healthy cells). This contributes to the formation of 'holes' in the membrane through which various factors necessary for the normal functioning of the cell escape. The results show that the PM1 peptide is selectively safe against cancer cells and, importantly, may become a safe drug (or drug component) in the future.
