A concussion occurs as a result of a head injury (in both adults and children), e.g. due to an accident, a blow, a fall or a collision with something/anyone.
Symptoms indicative of a concussion include a brief loss of consciousness, memory problems (the patient cannot remember what happened), headache, balance problems, disorientation, vomiting, nausea, slurred speech or irritability. If a concussion is suspected, it is essential to call an ambulance or transport the victim to hospital.
These symptoms should not be underestimated. A patient with a suspected concussion should be kept under specialist care for several days.
