EuropeanMelanoma Day (Euromelanoma Day) falls on 12 May. It is important to continuously raise public knowledge and awareness of how to diagnose and treat this malignant tumour.
This is because it turns out that if detected quickly, it is completely curable. on 12 May, as every year, it will be possible to take advantage of free nevus examinations at dermatological surgeries thanks to an action under the patronage of the Polish Dermatological Society. You can find a list of surgeries that perform skin checks on patients by looking at: http://www.euromelanoma.org/poland.
The incidence of melanoma is increasing year on year. According to research carried out in 2010, Poland is one of the European countries with the highest percentage of people with this skin cancer. Although the sun has a positive effect on the human body - thanks to its rays, vitamin D is produced - one should not overdo it by staying outdoors for long periods of time on sunny days. The disease is caused primarily by exposure to too much sun, which usually occurs in four ways: when spending time outdoors on sunny days for travel and/or daily chores, exposure during sports and leisure activities, sun exposure correlated with the nature of the job and deliberate exposure to UV rays to get a satisfactory tan.
Temporary restriction of sun exposure in these cases is known as primary prevention, while secondary prevention consists of self-examination of the skin after each exposure to the sun's rays. For this, the "ABCDE" method should be followed. The letter symbols refer to terms derived from the English language and refer respectively to the characteristics of each observed lesion. The letter 'A' indicates that the spot that has appeared on the skin is asymmetrical; 'B' that the borders of the nevus are not regular; 'C' that the colour of the observed lesion is black, red grey or milky; 'D' that it exceeds 5 mm in size and 'E' that it keeps getting bigger. If self-examination gives such results, the skin lesion should be consulted on the spot with a specialist, who will decide what treatment process to implement in the case.
An extremely helpful step to help you take the right steps to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays is to determine what phototype of skin you have. People with phototype I are most at risk of sunburn, which can be a direct breeding ground for melanoma. Regardless of this, however, it is advisable to avoid sun exposure between 11 am and 3 pm in summer, as this is when the UV effect is strongest.
Until a few years ago, medicine did not have the right tools to fight cancer, although this has also changed. Nowadays, doctors can use several therapies to effectively deal with the disease. Specialists are assisted by immunotherapy, which makes it possible to achieve the desired effect for those patients who are struggling with a relapse.
