Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is a rare (1/1000000/year), genetically determined degenerative brain disease. It is categorised as an encephalopathy caused by prions, abnormal proteins that are deposited and accumulate in brain tissue. Diseases with a similar background include the somewhat better-known Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, commonly known as mad cow disease.
