Fever in a child

A fever is a situation of an increase in internal body temperature relative to daily norms.

In the case of children, the daily norms of temperature fluctuation are greater than in an adult, hence we can speak of fever starting from 38 degrees C.

In newborns and infants, the temperature is measured rectally, as this is a more accurate and reliable measurement. In older children, a temperature measurement is taken in the mouth, less often in the ear.

The main causes of fever are bacterial and viral infections; however, it can also be a symptom of other illnesses. The amount of fever in a child, does not necessarily indicate the severity of the illness due to the immature and unstable thermoregulatory system. Therefore, mild infections can result in a very high fever and severe infections may not even cause a fever.

If a fever occurs and the baby is under three months of age, a medical check up is absolutely and always advisable due to the baby's low capacity to fight off infection. If the baby has a fever, give fluids, do not dress too warmly (if shivering, cover with a blanket until it stops), pay attention to the baby's general condition (consciousness, reaction to cuddling, skin colour).

If the drop in temperature is not the reason for the decrease in apathy and lethargy, see a doctor, as a more serious infection may be developing."[1]
