Hernia surgery is safe during caesarean section.

The results of recent studies suggest that inguinal or umbilical hernias that enlarge during pregnancy can be safely operated on during caesarean section, avoiding repeat hospitalisation. Combined hernia repair with cholecystectomy and other abdominal procedures have also been described previously. In a group of eight women in whom a hernia was also operated on during caesarean section, no major complications were observed, with the exception of one patient (with an inguinal hernia) in whom a slight delay in healing of the postoperative wound was reported. There is an increase in operative time for simultaneous inguinal hernia surgery, which is not the case for simultaneous umbilical hernia surgery. There are no differences in blood loss, the amount of anaesthetic drugs used or the length of hospitalisation after surgery. No hernia recurrence was observed at 56 months after the combined procedure. The results indicate that such a procedure is effective, safe and recommendable.
