Hyperthyroidism is a condition of excessive hormone secretion by the thyroid gland.
Symptoms depend on many factors including age. In children the following are observed:
- difficulty in walking up and down stairs,
- anxiety and sleep disturbances,
- excessive mobility,
- lack of concentration,
- warm and moist skin,
- excessive hair loss,
- rash and associated itching,
- eye irritation,
- accelerated heartbeat,
- increased systolic blood pressure with decreased diastolic blood pressure
If the above-mentioned symptoms are observed in a child, a doctor should be consulted, who will order tests to determine TSH, ft4 and ft3 levels. An ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland and palpation should also be carried out.
The thyroid can be treated in several ways. The most common is pharmacological treatment, which involves taking antithyroid drugs that inhibit the production of thyroid hormones. Surgical treatment involves partial or total removal of the thyroid gland.
