Rotavirus infection is an extremely dangerous type of infection in terms of the effects it has on children. Rotavirus causes diarrhoea which, in many cases, leads to dehydration, often resulting in hospitalisation. Unfortunately, every year around half a million children under the age of five die due to rotavirus infection. A recent discovery, linked to the activation of the innate immune system, has shown extremely high efficacy against this type of infection.
