Infective endocarditis (IE) is a disease that develops as a result of endocardial infection in the valves, ventricles, atria or endothelium of large thoracic blood vessels, vascular connections and foreign bodies in the heart. IE most commonly affects the aortic and mitral valves, less commonly the tricuspid valve.
