Insomnia (insomnia) is common among patients with CHF and may be a risk factor for CHF, according to recent studies.
To date, only a few studies have investigated the association between insomnia symptoms and the risk of CHF.
The study included 54279 men and women participating in the Nord-Trøndelag Health study (HUHTN) between 1995 and 1997 without symptoms of CHF. Data were collected on difficulties in falling asleep and maintaining sleep continuity. Participants were screened for symptoms of circulatory failure in 2008. These were found in 1,412 participants after a mean follow-up period of 11 years. A significant statistical association was found between the number of insomnia symptoms and the risk of circulatory failure (risk 1.3 times higher with two, and 4.5 times higher with three insomnia symptoms).
In conclusion, the authors concluded that insomnia may be a risk factor for circulatory failure.
