In newborn babies, jaundice is a fairly common and usually harmless phenomenon associated with the immaturity of the liver. Sometimes, however, the yellowish colouring of the skin and eyes lasts longer, accompanied by dark urine, discoloured stools or enlargement of the liver. In such situations, doctors consider more serious causes, including neonatal hepatitis and biliary atresia.
