A person suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder experiences:
- intrusive thoughts, i.e. unpleasant and recurring thoughts that impose themselves and are difficult to resist (e.g. compulsion to count in one's mind)
- intrusive images, i.e. unpleasant and recurring ideas (e.g. sexual) that are difficult to ward off
- intrusive activities, i.e. activities that are self-imposed and need to be performed, often repeatedly (e.g. washing hands)
- intrusive impulses, i.e. an unpleasant compulsion to do something (e.g. to laugh) that is difficult to resist.
