Atypical images of the small intestinal mucosa (infiltration of intraepithelial lymphocytes or slight shortening of the villi) are relatively common in patients undergoing gastrointestinal diagnosis, but the predictive value of these changes in terms of a definitive diagnosis of coeliac disease is very limited.
