Perfume

An estimated 95% of women and 75% of men come into daily contact with cosmetics. Approximately 10% of the population experience adverse reactions. This is usually related to their irritant effect, less commonly allergies.

We can dividecosmetics into leave-on and rinse-off. Creams, perfumes etc. contained in the first group are responsible for most allergies. The most sensitive areas are the eyelids, armpit folds and axillae.

The risk of adverse reactions is greater if cosmetics are applied to damaged skin.

Hypersensitivitysymptoms include: allergic contact dermatitis, lid and photo-oxic reactions. The lesions usually appear on the face, neck, hands or armpit pits. In the majority of patients, fragrances are the source of poor tolerance of cosmetics.

Deodorants are the most common sensitisers. The use of deodorant on healthy skin will result in dermatitis of the armpit pits. This reaction may manifest itself even several weeks after exposure. In 10% of patients, the allergic reaction is related to a fragrance called Lyral. This substance is used in about almost half of the cosmetics available.
