World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October. The day was established in 1979 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The aim of World Food Day is to deepen the public's awareness of global food issues and to strengthen the sense of solidarity in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.

Celebrations of this holiday take place every year, also in many Polish cities. This happens thanks to the involvement of children, young people, teachers, a huge number of volunteers and NGOs.

In our country, the problem of malnutrition still affects more than several million people living in poverty. At the same time, Poland is at the forefront in Europe when it comes to wasting food. More than one third of Poles admit to doing so. The products most often thrown away are bread and cold cuts.

The phenomenon of wasting food also concerns children. Pupils leave about 25 g of products uneaten every day, which, per year, amounts to more than 8 kg of wasted food. One of the reasons for pupils wasting food may be too short or too early lunch breaks at school. According to a report by the Supreme Audit Office, 11 of the 20 schools audited did not provide a 20-minute break for all willing pupils to eat lunch.

More than 30 special events will be organised across Poland to mark World Food Day. These will include happenings, cooking workshops or conferences.
