Tuberculosis is a disease that is vaccinated with the BCG vaccine (from: Bacillus, Calmett and Guerin). All newborn babies should receive it while still in hospital.
Despite the fact that the BCG vacc ine is on the compulsory vaccination calendar, parents have the right to refuse to have their child/newborn baby vaccinated. Paediatricians and pulmonologists urge parents to still decide to have their child vaccinated. The consequences of contracting tuberculosis can be much more serious than the complications caused by the vaccine due to the immaturity of the child's immune system.
Tuberculosis is a disease that spreads very rapidly and, importantly, it is possible to be ill and infect others without knowing it for many years.
It is worth remembering that the BCG vaccine contains very small amounts of weakened microorganisms. They do not even pose a threat to newborn babies!
