Mitochondrial diseases, are classified as genetic diseases (i.e. caused by mutations within a gene or genes). They develop as a result of abnormalities in the normal function and structure of mitochondria. In Poland, the number of people affected by mitochondrial diseases is increasing every year. The symptoms of these diseases affect tissues that have high energy requirements. What do we know about mitochondrial diseases?
