What are stents?

A stent is a small twisted "spring" that is placed inside a blood vessel to unblock it and allow blood and nutrients to flow through.

It is made of a chrome-cobalt alloy or steel. The stent is inserted into a specific area of the artery using a catheter that ends in a small balloon. Once it is placed in the desired location, e.g. in the iliac, radial or brachial artery, the catheter is removed and the stent itself is left behind.

The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. Patients over 65 years of age who have, among other things, an aortic aneurysm and are in poor health (undergoing cardiological, neurological or pulmonological treatment) are qualified for this procedure. After the procedure, the patient remains in a reclining position for approximately one hour and, importantly, requires regular medical checks.

Stent-graft surgery, on the other hand, involves implanting a stent with an attached vascular prosthesis in the damaged/altered vessel. The procedure is performed through the femoral artery and was first performed in 1991.
