Liraglutide is an analogue of human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It is responsible for the glucose-dependent secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells. This drug has a long-lasting effect and can be administered once daily. It improves glycaemic control by reducing blood glucose levels both during fasting and after a meal. Its very important role is the regulation of pancreatic glucagon and insulin secretion. Its action is as follows:

  1. In a hyperglycaemic situation, it stimulates insulin secretion and inhibits glucagon secretion

  2. During hypoglycaemia, it is responsible for reducing insulin secretion while not attenuating glucagon secretion.

Studies have shown that liraglutide delays gastric emptying and suppresses appetite, resulting in a reduction in fat mass and body weight.
