Speech specialists say that speech is a very complex process. Many parents would like their child to speak fluently already at the age of 1-2 years.
Increasingly, however, children start to speak later, i.e. at the age of 3-4 and even later. If the child's development is fully normal, it is possible to consult a doctor (paediatrician, speech therapist) and then wait for the child to catch up with his or her peers in terms of speech.
If you notice that at the age of two your little one speaks very few words (< 50 words) and has problems with simple instructions or understanding what you are saying, contact the paediatrician. It is very important that the paediatrician examines the little one and assesses whether there are any hearing problems.
There are many reasons that lead to speech problems in children, e.g. alcohol consumption during pregnancy, smoking, the mother's education, postnatal depression, emotional problems of the mother, severe stress and anxiety between the first and second year of life of the child.
Speech problems in children are not only a problem for the parents, but also for the children themselves, so don't wait if you see that something is wrong, go to the doctor for a consultation.
