What is fatigue and what are the disease causes of fatigue?
Everyone needs rest, relaxation and essential nutrients, the lack of which can upset the body's normal functioning and even cause illness.
Fatigue is a situation that arises due to a lack of energy reserves. It usually prevents us from continuing our work, causes drowsiness, problems with concentration, fatigue and much more. It is not, in most cases, a medical condition.
However, there are known pathological causes of fatigue, including: lung disease, hepatitis, insomnia, leukaemia, chronic left heart failure, cancer and many others. Therefore, fatigue should never be underestimated. It is always a good idea to consult your doctor and go for an examination.
Symptoms and course fatigue and sleepiness
Fatigue persists despite the exclusion of disease - what should I look for?
If a disease cause for fatigue has been ruled out, it is worth paying attention to how our body functions over the course of days, weeks and months. Particular attention should be paid to:
Sleep- if you notice that you still feel tired despite long (7 to 8 hours a night), restful, uninterrupted sleep, it may be that some other problem is the cause.
Nutrition - it is worth paying attention to your diet, i.e. eating a healthy and regular diet. Very often, when we feel tired, we reach for large amounts of coffee, Coke, Pepsi and other stimulants, which has the opposite effect, as does poor nutrition, which usually causes food intolerances. This is very often the cause of chronic, unremitting fatigue and lethargy.
Another important issue is anaemia. It is worth doing basic blood tests. Anaemia is very often accompanied by dizziness, nausea, feeling cold and irritability. To confirm the diagnosis of anaemia, a blood test should be carried out.
It is also worth paying attention to hyperthyroidism, especially if you notice that you are increasingly depressed, have no strength, everything hurts and you are sleepy. Laboratory tests are necessary as the thyroid may be hypothyroid or have a slowed metabolism. The levels of the hormones TSH, T3, T4 are tested in the blood.
Our heart condition. If you feel tired all the time when doing simple household tasks (vacuuming, dusting, gardening, window cleaning, etc.), this may be a sign that your heart is not working properly. See your doctor as soon as possible.
What is excessive sleepiness, or hypersomnia?
Hypersomnia, or chronic excessive sleepiness, is a medical condition that makes it very difficult to function normally. When dealing with it over a very long period of time, we should see a doctor in order to eliminate its pathological causes, which include: sleep apnoea, anaemia, diabetes, hypotension, hypothyroidism, depression, brain tumours, alcoholism, snoring, viral and bacterial infections and others. If excessive sleepiness does not have a medical cause, you should take care of your health, get regular sleep and drastically change your lifestyle and diet.
