Multidirectional treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

There is no cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, only symptomatic treatment is used. It is multidirectional, consisting not only of pharmacological measures, but also of rehabilitation, the incorporation of massage, speech therapy, nursing care and psychological support. There is no doubt that support from family and friends plays a very important role.

Pharmacological measures are taken as soon as the disease is diagnosed and are administered in order to:

  • protecting the nervous system
  • treating spasticity
  • reducing muscle spasticity
  • reducing muscle spasms
  • against excessive salivation
  • reducing tongue tremor
  • problems with falling asleep and sleeping
  • for painful conditions
  • in case of psychological problems
  • to prolong life and maintain patient's fitness

Rehabilitation plays a key role in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It should be started as soon as the disease is diagnosed and include (active exercises, passive exercises, massage, water exercises, swimming and hydrotherapy). At a later stage of the disease, the use of orthopaedic equipment is necessary. Learning and practising breathing exercises, correct positioning of the patient, personal hygiene, learning and practising speech and correct, regular, vitamin-rich nutrition play a very important role.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is currently an incurable disease. The patient requires full care from family and loved ones.
