Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids for health. They should be consumed in adequate amounts in the diet or possibly supplemented with over-the-counter preparations. They should not be supplemented in large doses without consulting a doctor as they also carry side effects.

It is important to buy omega-3 fatty acid supplements produced by recognised pharmaceutical companies, as preparations from unknown sources may contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium. Supplements vary in the amounts and proportions of fatty acids. Some are specially formulated for infants and children (e.g. drops, syrups). However, these should not be used without consulting a paediatrician. Adults should not take more than 3 - 4 g per day of omega-3 fatty acids, because of the increased risk of bleeding.

On average, fish oil capsules contain 30% om ega-3 fatty acids (i.e. per 1,000 mg of fish oil, there is approximately 300 mg of omega-3 fatty acids). The recommended dose is 1 g per day, so 3 capsules per day should be consumed. There are also supplements with a higher content of omega-3 fatty acids.
