The co-occurrence of two different psychiatric disorders at the same time, even if the symptoms are seemingly diametrically opposed, can be difficult to treat - a given symptom of the first disorder can affect the course of treatment and outcomes of the second. In the case of borderline, the diagnostic criteria may be parallel to those of the eating disorder, and the physical and emotional outcomes of the eating problems may exacerbate the personality disorder. In this sense, the eating model may become the platform on which personality problems are realised.
