Chemotherapy and sex

Chemotherapy is often an effective but also drastic treatment. As a result, many patients cut short their sex life, convinced that it is not allowed during cytostatic treatment. This is often a misconception.

Infections

The problem of infection is a more complex issue. This is because it can directly affect the reproductive organs, but also the question of the body's general condition and its ability to fight infection is important. As is well known, cytostatic drugs often impair the body's immunity by causing drastic changes in the blood count.

In addition, the vaginal epithelium is sometimes altered as a result of the treatment, which can result in cuts developing more easily in this area. This situation provides an opportunity for bacteria to penetrate deep into the body, which, being weakened by chemotherapy, may have difficulty fighting off infection. Sometimes the doctor will advise you to abstain from sex until your blood count has improved.

One more important point..

Like blood or hair, reproductive cells (sperm and egg cells) are often damaged or destroyed. For this reason, it is extremely important, when leading an active sex life during chemotherapy, to remember to use effective contraception. Fertilisation during treatment could result in the conception of diseased offspring.

Sexual intercourse during chemotherapy has many advantages. However, one should always bear in mind the situational context in which it is undertaken. It is nevertheless always safest to consult your chemotherapy doctor to be sure that the time for sexual intercourse is definitely right.
