This text summarises the current knowledge about so-called sex addiction. It is a rather controversial issue and not generally included in disease classifications, yet clinicians encounter patients in their practices who claim to be sex addicts and this often creates a great sense of helplessness for the specialist. The content summarises known contemporary theories on hypersexuality and how the mechanism of sex addiction can be understood.
