Lung diseases

GVHD is known in the literature as a dangerous complication that occurs after host haematopoietic cell transplantation. This complication is dangerous insofar as it causes the recipient's immune system to respond against itself. What does this mean in practice? The host organism starts fighting itself! Another extremely dangerous disease is Japanese encephalitis, which is one of the most common viral diseases in the Far East. Below - a brief guide to these two, dangerous diseases that we may encounter.

Prognosis for patients with GVHD

Prognosis depends primarily on which type of GVHD we are dealing with. According to statistics, nearly 80 % of patients affected by the mild form of GVHD survive ten years after detection of the disease. For patients with severe GVHD, the prognosis is not as good - about 5 % of patients survive ten years.

Japanese encephalitis (JZM)

Japanese encephalitis, is caused by a virus from the Flaviviridae family . The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. JZM is considered one of the most common viral diseases affecting Southeast Asian countries.

The disease process develops up to 16 days after the virus enters the bloodstream. After the bite of the mosquito that carried the virus, inactive forms of the virus enter the human bloodstream, where the disease process begins. The first symptoms of the disease can appear between six and even 16 days.

Symptoms of JZM

The most common symptoms, include high fever, severe muscle pain, intestinal disorders. Sometimes, disorders of the central nervous system appear as symptoms, manifesting themselves in the form of disturbances of consciousness, problems with coordination. Doctors also note a high proportion of patients who are asymptomatic. However, it is difficult to clearly assess why some people experience Japanese encephalitis extremely severely and others asymptomatically.

Complications and prevention

According to the Military Institute of Medicine, the severe form of the disease can lead to severe complications such as ataxia, parkinsonism and mental disorders. The mortality rate of the severe form of Japanese encephalitis is close to 30 per cent. As the best method of preventing infection, doctors recommend the use of preventive vaccination, mosquito nets or wearing clothes to protect the body from possible mosquito bites.
