The holiday season and the long-awaited holiday from work and school are fast approaching. It should be a time pleasantly spent, free from problems such as illness. Some events cannot be foreseen, but many can be protected against.
The most effective way to prevent tick-borne meningitis is to have a full course of vaccination, which is done in 3 doses. "The first dose is given on a day of the patient's choice, while the second dose is given after 1-3 months. For a faster immune response, the second dose can be given after just two weeks. The third, on the other hand, should be administered between 5 and 12 months after the second vaccination.
Longer-term protection is ensured by a booster dose. The first booster should be given no later than three years after the third dose. The interval between subsequent booster doses should be 3 to 5 years." - says Dr Jarosław Mrożek from Medicover.
Wherever you are, protect yourself
Prophylaxis is necessary and important regardless of whether you intend to spend your holiday on a beach in Egypt or Ustka. Think about early immunization for yourself and your loved ones.
Remember to bring a first-aid kit with you, including over-the-counter remedies for diarrhoea, painkillers and fever pills, insect repellents and soothing agents for possible sunburn.
However, if you notice any worrying symptoms, go to the doctor or call for help immediately. It is not worth waiting for an illness to develop and completely spoil your holiday.
Finally, some useful advice:
- Always wash and dry your hands before eating.
- Remember that only food prepared with heat is safe.
- Dishes containing raw ingredients can be contaminated with viruses, bacteria, parasites.
- Do not eat food sold at roadside stalls.
- Drink only bottled or boiled water.
- Avoid ice cubes.
- Use only boiled water to brush your teeth.
- Watch out for insects, such as mosquitoes, which can transmit a number of diseases.
- Use the sun in moderation.
Have a pleasant and peaceful holiday!
