Operative transvaginal births, i.e. using forceps or a vacuum aspiration, are an alternative to an immediate caesarean section in the event of a prolonged second period of labour or the first signs of deterioration of the foetus. However, many mothers-to-be categorically refuse this form of assisted natural childbirth. Are these methods really fraught with such a high risk of complications? Is caesarean section always a better option?
