The direct causes of Raynaud's disease are still being sought. At present, it is presumed that patients affected by this condition have significantly more adrenergic receptors in their arterial walls, which are stimulated by cold. This in turn results in an increase in their sensitivity to norepinephrine and a strong contraction of the blood vessels.
