Research shows that people who suffer or have suffered from depression appear to be at higher risk of Parkinson's disease. Perhaps depression is an early symptom of Parkinson's disease, which is expected to manifest and develop in the person at a later stage?
On the other hand, depression may be considered a risk factor for Parkinson's disease. Patients with 'pure' depression but also those in whom it has appeared as a result of, for example, trauma, stroke, drug or alcohol use have been considered. There is no doubt that the two diseases are closely linked. Further studies and observations on larger groups of patients are needed to show whether depression is a symptom or a risk factor for Parkinson's disease.
