Star anise , also called star anise, was originally used as a spice in our cooking. It is worth mentioning here that already the ancient Greeks used it to "cure" certain diseases. Nowadays, it is also used to alleviate some unpleasant ailments, e.g. of the digestive or respiratory system.
Star anise is the dried fruit of a tree called badian(Illicium verum). It looks like an eight-pointed star, is very aromatic and brown in colour. Its properties are invaluable and it has found use in natural medicine for:
- flatulence and gas problems
- relieving the effects of excessive overeating
- stimulation of digestive (stomach) juices
- improving digestion
- problems with the respiratory system (expectorant effect)
- relieving symptoms of persistent coughing.
Star anise is very often used to season vegetables, meats, compotes, tea, baked goods, fruit soups, but also in the production of various types of alcohol.
